Cisco Catalyst 3750 Series Review

With its Catalyst 3750 series, Cisco brings a higher level of intelligence to the enterprise while also reducing energy consumption. These multilayer switches utilise Cisco’s EnergyWise technology, which measures and controls energy use within a network. When combined with Cisco’s network management tools, the Cisco 3750 can help a business increase productivity while cutting energy consumption.

What is Cisco’s 3750 Series?

The Cisco Catalyst 3750 series is a stackable switch available in 12 different models. With each model, enterprises have access to Cisco’s StackWise technology, which allows all switches in a cluster to be configured over one IP address. This provides redundancy to an organisation, which means if one switch in the cluster fails, another switch becomes the master.

The Models In The Cisco 3750 Series
ModelInformation
3750
The 3750 offers advanced features that include IPv6 routing and access control lists within the hardware.
3750E
With the 3750E, enterprises have access to Power over Ethernet (PoE) configurations on all 48 ports. This switch also has 2 gigabit or 10 gigabit ethernet uplinks, ensuring it will handle future upgrades with ease.
3750X
The 3750X supports Cisco StackPower, which allows multiple stacked units to share one power supply. This technology also enables some of the power supplies to be taken offline, increasing the efficiency of the units.
3750G
This switch features an integrated wireless LAN controller for enhanced security and easier setup.

One major differentiator between the models is the presence of StackWise versus StackWise Plus. The 3750 runs Stackwise, while the 3750E and 3750X introduce StackWise Plus technology. While both technologies offer intelligent interconnectivity for a single switching unit, StackWise Plus introduced additional features, including local stripping. With local stripping, less bandwidth is used throughout the ring, improving throughput performance.

StackWise Plus can be combined with StackWise in the same rack, but the StackWise Plus models convert downward to StackWise mode. In this situation, however, the 3750E and 3750X will continue to conduct local switching.

General Product Information & Specifications

One is the base software that includes advanced quality of service (QoS), security, and built-in routing protocol for Open Shortest Path First (OSPF). An advanced software configuration adds on advanced unicast and multicast routing for IP and policy-based routing, among other features.

The Catalyst 3750 series features the following specifications:

  • 32-Gbps stack interconnect
  • 24 and 48 port configurations available
  • Ethernet 10/100 ports with IEEE 802.3af

The Cisco 3750 series fills a niche of the market that is too small for an extensive chassis solution but too large for smaller standalone projects. The ability to connect up to nine switches on a network makes it ideal for businesses that want to set up a scalable environment. Once connected, enterprises report an increase in speed and a reduction in latency, making it a popular option for today’s data, audio, and videoconference networking needs.

Enterprises that are already utilising Cisco switches will find the configuration interface familiar. The stackability features in the 3750 series bring a bit of a learning curve, especially if the administrator needs to set up redundancy. One popular feature of this series is that it can be managed remotely. Once the switches are put in place and powered on, an administrator can take over setting them up from any location with connectivity to it.

Cisco’s Catalyst 3750 switches are top-quality units that provide efficient, reliable handling of a business’s data technology needs. With the ability to scale up to nine switches in one stack, these units can scale as a business expands, making it the perfect choice for today’s growing business.
